The National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned students applying for MBBS programmes in China to do adequate checks before accepting admissions.
On February 8, 2022, according to an official notice by the National Medical Council of India (NMC), the Ministry of External Affairs had noticed that some universities in People’s Republic of China had begun to accept applications for admission to MBBS programs for the 2018-2022 academic year.
To date, no relaxation of the restrictions has been announced by the Chinese government and a large number of international, as well as Indian students, have not been able to return to their studies in China because of this measure.
In addition, the Chinese authorities had communicated earlier that courses would be conducted online. However, the NMC does not recognize or approve medical courses done only by online mode because of the extant rules.
NMC advises students to go through the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) regulations before they apply to a foreign medical school
Ms. Bhullar said that students must check the regulations of FMGE before applying to or planning to seek admission at any institution in China/foreign institutions. Students must exercise due diligence in making their choices.
Takeaway: The National Medical Commission has issued an advisory to Indian students who plan to pursue MBBS in China. The advisory warns that such Online Mode study programmes are not recognised by the NMC. The Commission also advises students must check the regulations of FMGE before applying to or planning to seek admission at any institution in China/foreign institutions
